Dysport

cogency

Dysport ( abobotulinumtoxin A) was FDA approved for the treatment of facial lines in 2009. Dysport was the second FDA approved purified substance that temporarily blocks muscular nerve signals. Injecting small amounts into specific facial muscles diminishes facial muscle activity resulting in softening and resolution of unwanted facial lines. Dysport is also used to treat excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) of the underarms, palms, and soles.

Loucas Dermatology has been using Dysport since its release. It is a very effective treatment to reduce forehead lines, glabellar lines (the 11 lines between your eyebrows), and crow’s feet around the eyes. Dysport is also effective to help reduce neck bands/lines, chin wrinkles, help elevate droopy eyebrows, and help turn up a down-turned mouth.

Dr. Loucas does not like to use this product around the mouth to reduce lip lines, but finds Botox more useful and predictable for this treatment.

The one advantage of Dysport over Botox is its very rapid onset of action. It starts to take effect within hours of injection, whereas, Botox can take 2 to 7 days to take effect. This makes Dysport appealing in those instances when you need results quick. The one disadvantage is that it usually does not last as long as Botox. We do find there are patients who respond better to Dysport and those who do better with Botox. Dr. Loucas would be happy to discuss which might be best for you.
